American retail behemoth Wal-Mart is working with Chinese web firm Alibaba to enable shoppers at its stores in Shenzhen pay with their mobile phones.

Initially the Alipay Wallet can be used by customers in 25 stores but eventually the service will be rolled out to all of Wal-Mart's 410 sites in the country.

The Alipay Wallet does not require any hardware updates for Wal-Mart, with customers paying by having a barcode on their handset scanned.

Alipay Wallet has around 190 million active users and settled $788 billion in transactions last year.

Wal-Mart's Marilee McInnis told Fortune: "Alipay will help us serve our customers better by allowing mobile payment in seconds. Increasingly, our customers want convenience."

In the US Wal-Mart is leading a consortium of retailers building their own mobile payments service under the MCX brand as it battles for control of the checkout against the likes of Apple, Google and the card schemes.
