Banks being faced with the prospect of lower fees in the new SEPA/PSD world will be likely to choose the most cost-effective mechanism for processing payments for a given quality of service. Some may decide to embark on bilateral netting relationships that will result in a few pan-European ACH organisations chasing reduced volumes.

In this paper, SunTec Business Solutions suggests that price sensitivity and the ability to adopt least cost routing will become a major competitive weapon across the sector, especially as the costs of system changes could negate any savings in processing fees.
