Electronic payment systems are becoming more attractive for large scale financial institutions as the digital economy enters a new growth phase, says Deutsche Bank Research.
The research note suggests that micro-payment systems and mobile payments are likely to make advances in the short and medium-term, with m-payments in particular forecast to capture five per cent European market share over the next five years.
However, Deutsche believes that in the longer-term traditional payment instruments that have been successfully adapted to meet the security demands of the digital economy will win out. These include credit cards, debit cards and smart card-based electronic wallets.
