25 percent of US computers infected with malware

Here's something to keep you awake at night - the OECD reckon one in four computers in the US are infected with malware of various forms. It's all highly sophisticated and getting more and more devious as the baddies take over huge number of machines to provide a global botnet to do their bidding.

Kits to mount cyber attacks are even available to buy online - except as previously reported - some of these were found to have a sting in the tail whereby they sent the harvested info back to base.

Cyber crime pays it would appear. So what to do? Well - firewalls and anti-virus obviously help - as does warning the users endlessly. You could also argue that it should influence your choice of operating system. It did mine

With many banks adopting mobile web based and poorly designed mobile software banking it won't be too long before we see similar results with mobiles.

It doesn't bode well for consumers who want to bank online does it? Especially when the banks aren't liable for customer losses. The real cost of banking must include all that $79.99 anti-virus, anti-phishing and firewall software which consumers don't buy because it doesn't really work. If it weren't for online banking they'd never buy it.

There is obviously an insurance product waiting in the wings here. If not then you can bet it's only because the risk is immeasurable.
