I have no doubt that many cash transactions would be converted to mobile if there was a mobile solution that offered consumers the security, anonymity and speed of cash. As it stands, this does not look like it’s going to be the case any time soon. 

The biggest displacement of cash in the past 15 years or so has come, of course, via debit cards rather than mobile payments. This has occurred to the point where debit cards are the most common form of consumer payment in the UK with around £350mn of annual transactions in 2012. This is only increasing with the relatively recent introduction of Contactless transactions.
