CA Technologies (CA) today announced that the major Spanish banking Group BBVA has implemented CA ecoMeter in its Uptime Institute Tier IV certified data center to help improve data center capacity, maintain uptime and availability, and reduce costs through better energy management.

CA ecoMeter is a key component of the CA DCIM solution.

BBVA's 20,000 square meter data center in Madrid, which includes a computer room that is 1,525 square meters, hosts a large part of the technology infrastructure that supports BBVA's European operations and manages 52 million daily transactions through 2,000 high range servers.

Growing demand on technology and infrastructure hosted in the BBVA's data center increases energy, cooling and space capacity requirements. By providing data on energy consumption, CA ecoMeter allows BBVA to take necessary measures to provide for availability and uptime and increase infrastructure efficiency.

"We designed our data center so that it could support large growth. We needed a solution that could provide an integrated view—in real time—of data related to the use of energy and other environmental variables. We also needed to have alarms that could alert us to anomalous levels of power demand so that we could avoid failures in the infrastructure," said Carlos Redondo, manager for CPD Infrastructures for Europe at BBVA. "With accurate information on power, temperature and other variables, we can make better use of our infrastructure and more easily plan capacity, make changes that do not put operations at risk, and increase our energy and carbon efficiency."

BBVA selected the CA DCIM technology after conducting pilot tests to evaluate capacity and performance through dashboards on energy consumption, thermal maps and alarms, calculations of power usage effectiveness (PUE), historical reports and trend analysis. The solution was implemented in six weeks.

Additionally, the CA Technologies software exchanges data with the imVision intelligent cabling software used by BBVA, and was uploaded with the equipment inventory, so that the organization can collect information on servers as well as the fiber and network devices that connect them. This consolidated view of the infrastructure helps BBVA increase efficiency and improve change management.
