US restaurant reports data breach

Source: Sweetwaters on the River

Officials of Sweetwaters on the River restaurant today announced that the security of its point-of-sale computer system was breached between June 19 and October 3, 2008.

The restaurant has taken active steps to prevent future unauthorized access. While Sweetwaters is located in the Valley River Inn, the security breach did not involve any of the Inn's computer systems or data.

As a result of the security breach, the information magnetically encoded on credit or debit cards, which may include the cardholder's name, card number, card expiration date and other information encoded by the card issuer, may have been obtained by unauthorized persons.

Patrons of Sweetwaters who used their credit or debit cards between June 19 and October 3, 2008 should consider taking appropriate steps to protect themselves against the risk of any unauthorized transactions. This can include checking all statements for the card used at Sweetwaters to identify unauthorized transactions and reviewing the cardholder's consumer report information maintained by the nationwide consumer reporting agencies over the next 12 to 24 months.

Cardholders should report any suspected identity theft to law enforcement, including the Federal Trade Commission. Additional information to assist the cardholder in protecting against identity theft is available at the FTC's website at ftc.gov/idtheft or by calling the FTC.

Sweetwaters regrets any inconvenience this incident has caused its patrons.
