US banks commit to digital cheque imaging

HSBC Bank USA and Wachovia have each announced plans to introduce new cheque image-based services.

HSBC Bank USA has contracted with North Carolina-based Viewpointe to archive images of all cheque and cheque-related documents processed by the bank. The archiving firm will support high speed retrieval of cheque images so that back office operations, customer service personnel and even bank customers can directly access their own cheque images over the Internet within 24 hours of deposit or posting.

HSBC Bank USA will use image archive software from Check Solutions to feed the cheque images to the Viewpointe archive.

Thomas Kaiser, senior vice president of HSBC Bank USA, says: "Our imaging capability will allow us to connect our customers immediately to information regarding their banking transactions. What literally required days of waiting will now only be reduced to a few seconds."

In a separate announcement, Wachovia Corporation says that it has chosen the Silas Technologies Image Archive System to provide a full prime pass transaction and image archive solution. The bank anticipates the system will archive more than 21 million cheque images and associated transactions per day.
