Beer-addled revellers at this year's Oktoberfest looking to buy tat won't need to fumble in their lederhosen pockets for loose change thanks to German Square-alike payworks which has equipped buxom fräuleins with iPhones and readers for accepting card payments.
Munich-based payworks has developed the app and EMV chip card reader-based system for Austrian payment service provider PayUnity and it is getting an outing at Oktoberfest - which is the world's largest fair, attracting seven million visitors - this year.
Local retailer BavaRoi is equipping its "pretty saleswomen" with the technology to enable them to take card payments for souvenirs like Bavarian hats, stuffed animals, flowers and giant pretzels.
Moritz Gauger, MD, BavaRoi, says: "When our customers wanted to pay by card in the past, our girls had to get one of our rented card terminals from our booth. This process took quite some time and was quite complicated...This makes it much easier for us and especially for our clients."
