Belgian m-payments project killed off

A Belgian mobile money project involving leading telcos and banks has fallen through, according to local press reports.

Last February, mobile network operators Belgacom, Base and Mobistar and leading banks outlined plans to pool resources for a national m-payments standard, covering both contactless and SMS-based transactions.

At the time, the partners predicted that the system would launch later in 2011 but now, according to Data News, the project has been halted with the banks and telcos disagreeing on the shape the service should take.

Citing sources, Data News says that among the problems was Mobistar's unhappiness with using rival Belgacom's PingPing platform as the basis for the new offering.
