Westpac offers customers caffeine boost through coffee ordering app tie-up

With a new survey showing that Australian smartphone users think the nation will go cashless within a few years, Westpac has teamed up with mobile coffee ordering outfit Hey You to give customers $5 off their morning latte through the bank's app.

Westpac customers that open the bank's app will now see an 'order ahead at cafes' tile on their mobile screens. When thy tap it and link their bank card they will receive the $5 credit.

They can then place an order and pay at hundreds of cafes through the Hey You app, skipping lines when they reach their destination.

Westpac's tech-focused venture capital fund Reinventure led a $5 million funding round in August for Beat the Q Posse Group, the company behind the Hey You app.

The partnership comes as a Westpac survey of 1137 smartphone users shows that four in five think making payments via their handsets will soon be the norm and most think Aussies will be 90% cash-free by 2027.

With long wait times for food and drinks the biggest frustration for survey respondents, 4 in 5 agree the ability to pre-order an item using an app before picking it up will become the norm.

Rebekah Campbell, co-founder, Hey You, says: "Australian consumers are becoming used to an Uber-like service. No one enjoys waiting around to order coffee or lunch. To have it paid for and waiting when you arrive feels like a 21st century experience."
