Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks are to close 28 bank branches and invest £45 million in "improving services" after experiencing a 30% drop in high street footfall over the past three years.

The plans by the National Australia Bank subsidiaries include the development of six flagship branches, new and improved mobile and Internet banking services, and greater distribution through third parties.

The banks say they plan to spend £2.5 million over the next nine months to refashion its branch network, plus an additional £20 million spend on Internet and mobile banking.

Other investment will include a switch to contactless debit and credit cards in preparation for the launch of the national mobile money service Paym.

"These necessary changes will move Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks in line with the way customers are accessing their banking services," says the firm, pointing to a 40% rise in Internet and mobile banking use over the past three years.
