Thieves tunnel their way to ATM cash

Crooks have dug a 50 foot tunnel under a Manchester building to get to an ATM from which they stole piles of cash.

Police believe that the thieves may have spent several months digging their "complex" tunnel structure to gain access to the ATM at a branch of Tesco in Salford.

With their route finally completed, on Friday night the gang made their way into the shop, where they stole cash boxes containing a "substantial sum of money" before making their way back out.

Appealing for witnesses, DS Mark Toker says: "The offenders must have spent long periods of time in the area over the last few months, which people may have noticed."

This is not the first time that crooks have dug their way to cash in Manchester. In 2012 a gang spent six months digging a 100 foot tunnel to reach a cash machine but only made off with a paltry £6000 for their troubles.

In 2007 a 40-foot tunnel at the same site was filled in with concrete after being discovered by workmen.
