Fidelity unveils Pebble smartwatch app

US financial services giant Fidelity Investments has developed a Pebble smartwatch app which lets wearers check market information with a flick of the wrist.

Having already built a Google Glass app, the firm's R&D arm, Fidelity Labs has now connected its Android app to the Pebble, enabling people to view a stock watch list with market information and alerts throughout the day.

Launched on Kickstarter in 2012, the Pebble smartwatch quickly raised $10 million in funding. In February, the firm opened an online apps store, an open platform for sharing apps made for wearable technology.

While areas such as gaming and fitness have so far dominated, financial services firms have also been looking at the watch as they try to figure out how to crack the new but growing wearable technology market.

Earlier this week boutique Web design agency BeautifulLab, unveiled a Pebble payments app that leverages LevelUp's Developer Platform to make it possible to pay at the check-out with a flick of the wrist.

In a blog post, Fidelity Labs says that although smartphone users check their handsets 150 times a day, wearables are more convenient because "unlike a smartphone, a smartwatch allows them to go largely 'hands-free' to access the information they need, quickly and easily".
