Sci-Fi Coins Exchange boldly goes where no currency has gone before

Geeks tired of earth-bound crypto-currencies can now trade in their bitcion for Klingon Empire Darsek at a new science fiction focussed exchange.

The Sci-Fi Coin Exchange is promising "to boldly go where no crypto-coin has gone before", letting users switch their bitcoins and litecoins for Star Trek-based Gold Pressed Latinum and United Federation Credits, and Battlestar Galactica-inspired Cubits.

Although the exchange is taking a knowing, light-hearted approach, it insists that the various currencies being traded on it could have a bright future in a world (universe) where niche coins - from Dogecoin to Nyancoin - are gaining in popularity.

The coin creators are also taking differing approaches to their efforts: the Colonial Treasury Cubits is SHA256-based, while The United Federation of Planets Credit system is blake-256-based, and the Klingon Empire Darsek is scrypt-based.

Libertarian-minded crypto-currency enthusiasts could be tempted by these outer-space options as regulators dig their claws further into earth-bound rivals.

This week UK treasury minister David Gauke hinted that VAT could soon be slapped on bitcoin. "This is a new and complex issue and the appropriate VAT treatment is currently being considered. HMRC will publish guidance shortly," Gauke told MPs.
