Third of Americans use mobile banking - Pew

Just over half of American adults now bank online and nearly a third bank using their mobile phones, according to the Pew Research Center.

The Pew data shows that of the 85%-odd Americans who use the Internet, 61% bank online, a modest rise from 58% in 2010.

In contrast, m-banking usage has soared over the last two years, nearly doubling among 903 mobile phone owners polled, from 18% in 2011 to 35% by the middle of this year.

Men are more likely to bank online than women, white people more likely than black people, the young more than the old, the well-educated more than the poorly educated and the rich more than the poor.

Although the trends are broadly similar for mobile banking, there is a difference when it comes to race: 41% of non-whites, including Hispanics, use their handset for financial services, compared to just 32% of whites.
