MBNA creates 1000 jobs with new Chester tech centre

Bank of America's MBNA card business plans to create up to 1000 jobs at a new technology and operations centre in the UK city of Chester.

The centre will be completed by 2013 and support MBNA's global banking and markets and wealth management businesses across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

However, the good news has been partially offset by plans to axe around 150 positions at the European card department in the city, where MBNA employees a total of around 3000 people.

This comes on top of 400 job losses outlined in October after BofA decided to sell off its UK and Ireland credit card businesses as part of a strategy to sell off non-core assets and build up capital to meet new regulations.

According to local press reports, 100 positions are also being cut from the 750-strong workforce at MBNA's Carrick-on-Shannon site in Ireland.
