US firm pilots biometric vending machines

A US firm has begun testing biometric vending machines that enable customers to make purchases using their thumbprint, according to local press reports.

Massachusetts-based Next Generation Vending and Food Service is testing around 60 of the machines in north east America, says MyFoxNY, with participating customers able to ties their thumbprint to a credit card.

The firm is also trialling machines with 46 inch touch-screen displays that let customers click on an item, flip the image and see the nutritional information on the back of the packaging.

Japanese electronics giant Hitachi unveiled its biometric vending machine last year, letting customer make payments by placing their finger over a scanner.
