ABN Amro to cut thousands of IT jobs

ABN Amro is planning to cut around 3800 global technology roles in a bid to reduce operating costs, according to a report by Dutch IT magazine Computable.

The weekly mag says ABN Amro is planning to reduce the number of IT jobs across its global operations to 1200 from its current 5000.

The bank said last November that it was axing 1200 IT jobs at its Netherlands and US operations under restructuring plans to generate savings of EUR770 million by 2007.

An ABN Amro spokesman told Reuters reporters that the bank is expected to release details of the latest job cuts in September. He says the jobs could be offshored but no decisions have yet been taken.

The bank's spokesman also told Reuters that ABN Amro was in exclusive talks with IBM on outsourcing its IT infrastructure operations, but the bank had not yet finalised a deal. He said talks with vendors on outsourcing IT maintenance and development were continuing.
