Contact sports fans go contactless with MasterCard PayPass

MasterCard is to incorporate its PayPass contactless technology into the card loyalty programmes run by MBNA on behalf of the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens.

Under the agreement, both Qwest Field and M&T Bank Stadium will accept MasterCard PayPass cards at the point-of-sale, beginning with the 2005 football season.

NFL sportsfans at the stadiums will be able to tap the contactless cards on specially equipped merchant terminals to pay for refreshments or souvenirs.

The Seahawks have exprimented with contactless technology in the past, introducing RFID keyfobs for season ticket holders in the 2003-2004 season.

Scott Patrick, vice president, partnership development, the Seattle Seahawks, says: "Fans benefit from the added speed and convenience in quickly returning to their seats and enjoying the game."

Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles launched a similar implementation ofPayPass at its stadium.

MasterCard says it is continuing to explore further deployments of the technology at sports arenas throughout 2005.
