JCB and AEON deliver QuicPay contactless offline payments service

Japanese payment card issuer JCB has teamed with credit card company AEON Credit Service to develop QuicPay, a contactless payment system that will be available over NTT DoCoMo's mobile hand sets.

QuicPay, which stands for Quick and Useful IC Payment, is an offline payment service where part of the customer's existing credit limit is assigned to a specific contactless IC chip, which may be embedded either in a plastic card or incorporated in a NTT DoCoMo mobile phone that runs the i-mode FeliCa mobile wallet.

Any purchases made are then billed to the customer's existing credit card. JCB says transaction times of less than one second are standard for offline processing and no signature is needed.

JCB and AEON say they will also invite other credit card companies to participate in the QuicPay initiative. Trials of the payment service will begin in the autumn.
