PayPal pips Apple with One Touch mobile and bitcoin payments

With the Apple juggernaut about to steamroller all other payments-related news, PayPal has pushed the innovation bar a little higher by announcing plans to enable 'One Touch' transactions on iOS and Android phones and adding support for bitcoin purchasing.

The moves were announced by Braintree CEO Bill Ready at the TechCrunch Disrupt event in San Francisco and prefigured in a teaser video released on YouTube by PayPal.

"With One Touch, people will be able to pay across their favorite apps in a single touch on any platform, eliminating the need for usernames and passwords each time you pay," Ready told the TechCrunch audience.

One Touch is currently available to US-based merchants only, but will be rolled out internationally later this year.

The integration with Bitcoin is driven by a partnership with Coinbase, the cryptocurrency processor which claims 1.6 million consumer wallets and 36,000 merchants globally.

Ready says bitcoin payments will become available in the coming months. "As we make bitcoin available, our v.zero SDK will make it seamless for developers and merchants to add bitcoin to their existing payment methods and provide an elegant, adaptive user interface for consumers to pay in bitcoin with their Coinbase wallet."
