Square taps Bluetooth for money transfers

Today, Cash adds the ability to send or request money from anyone nearby using Bluetooth LE technology.

The new feature lets customers discover people within close proximity and simply tap their name or photo to make a payment. Cash’s nearby payment feature makes paying friends and family easier than ever whether across the dinner table or across the room.

Just like paper cash, the new feature enables customers to quickly pay anyone nearby, even if they don’t have their contact information, streamlining payments for everything from group dinner bills, work outings, sporting events and concert tickets.

With Cash for iOS 8, customers can now choose to make themselves visible to anyone in the same space as them, or just to friends. The app can detect other Cash customers within 250 feet of the sender or recipient - making payments quick and convenient. The app update for iOS 8 also includes the ability to swipe a push notification to approve and reject a payment request.

Cash is a free app from Square that enables customers to send or request money from anyone using just a debit card and their e-mail address, phone number or location. Cash payments are free to send and receive and deposit directly into customers bank accounts, often instantly.

Launched less than a year ago, Cash has processed hundreds of millions of dollars in payments across the U.S. and is available for iOS and Android.
