Today, LINK, the UK cash machine network reported that the value of LINK cash withdrawals[1] during the week ending Sunday 4 December had risen by 11% to £2,592 million (£2.6 billion) when compared to the same week last year.
The largest daily year on year increases were Wednesday 30 November and Thursday 1 December saw both saw increases of over 25% when compared to last year.
John Howells, LINK CEO commented, "The amount of cash withdrawn from cash machines is an important indicator as to the health of the economy and how much people are spending in the run-up to Christmas and these are very positive figures.
"We know from our research that the most common things for people to spend their ATM cash on are entertainment, food and groceries and, at this time of the year, items like clothes, DVDs and games, which are all key areas for pre-Christmas spending."
