Gemalto ships 'optical authentication' device for German online market

Security vendor Gemalto has unveiled a combined one-time password generator and screen capture authentication reader for online banking that enables users to identify themselves by reading data displayed on their computer screen.

Developed specifically for the German market, users put their bank card in the reader to check the PIN before placing the tool in front of their PC screen. The reader displays the transaction data for the customer to sign. Finally the reader displays a one-time password code for the user to enter.

Gemalto says the technology is compliant with the latest German hand-held device standard and taps the security of the widely deployed Secure Chip Card Operating System banking cards.

Jacques Seneca, EVP, security business unit, Gemalto, says: "Gemalto's strong historical presence in Germany, particularly in the banking sector, has provided us with an in-depth understanding of local banks' specific needs. This resulted in the development of an authentication solution that is perfectly tailored for this very advanced market."
