UK high street bank Barclays has launched a mobile banking service for its 1.9 million Internet banking customers.Customers with a Web-enabled phone can access the Barclay's Web banking service via a 'Barclays.mobi' mobile Web link.
The link will take personal customers to the pages of .mobi domain site purpose-built for viewing on mobile phones.
After a secure log in, customers can check their account balance and statements. Barclays says more interactive services will be added in the future.
Sean Gilchrist, director for electronic banking at Barclays, says: "These days most of us are never far from our mobile phones and this new service means that we are now never far from our bank account either."
Earlier this year UK banking group Alliance and Leicester (A&L) launched a mobile banking service that runs on the MoniLink network developed by IT services firm Morse and the Link Interchange Network.
HSBC and its first direc unit also use the MoniLink platform to deliver on-demand mobile banking to customers. Last year first direct also began trials of a service that provides customers with video access to customer representatives over 3's 3G mobile phone network.
