Old dogs taught new ATM tricks

UK charity Canine Partners is training dogs to use cash machines for their disabled owners.

The dogs are being trained to insert and withdraw cards at ATMs to help people who are not able to stretch up to the unit themselves.

Karen O'Donoghue, a spokesperson for the charity, told reporters that some people in wheelchairs might manage to lever themselves out of their wheelchair to insert the card into the unit and enter their PIN, but many do not have the strength to remain in that position while the machine processes the request.

She says the dogs take over when the owners are unable to reach the unit or continue the transaction.

The pooch stands on its back legs, places its paws on the ATM and takes the card, the money and the receipt in its mouth and gives it to the owner.
