The Windows 7 boy band pop video

Here's a moderately amusing viral video on YouTube attempting to plug PDC 2008, where traditionally Microsoft unveil their future of "the Platform" and technical strategy. Their what?

At the event it's expected that Steve Ballmer will explain what he meant by Windows Cloud and it also seems that attendees of the event can waltz off with a copy of Windows 7. I presume those are two different things!

The battle for video supremacy

Microsoft have been fighting back on the advertising front recently, then again they've always had high-profile ad campaigns (check this out - this is a priceless list of genuinely fun ads and/or in-house videos)!

The Apple ones still have some bite despite seemingly running forever - take for example the 'group' or 'calming teas' ads on www.apple.com.

And now from Microsoft, following the rather limp Seinfeld outing, there's the I'm a PC campaign. Well I can sort of see what they were aiming at, but the original Mac ads were about how bad the PC itself was - not really about the users. This does run the risk of appearing to play catch-up and missing the point in the process. I'm still talking about the ad campaign there of course, not casting aspersions on "the Platform".

But Pete, everyone knows Apple has always had better adverts than Microsoft.

But then again its easier for Apple. They sell to a niche audience. For every one Apple customer, there are fifteen Windows PC customers. So, yes, its far tougher to be all things to all people (sorry, most of the people).

That Steve Jobs has it easy. I guess he can only imagine how much more complicated life gets when you are really successful like Bill Gates.

Not sure I'd describe the iPod and iPhone as niche!

Here's a rather interesting take on Microsoft coverage from Sunday's Observer.

Pete

It'd be great to hear Apple's own perspective in a blog. Which makes it a bit of a bummer then that blogging is frowned upon by Apple.

I think Microsoft has 3,000 or so employees who blog. You see that must be why I get confused. Which one is the groovy open minded company, and which one is the uptight one, again?

Still, its always good to get a balanced perspective on these matters.

Perhaps Microsoft should take another approach?
