Sumitomo Mitsui orders SchlumbergerSema Java cards

SchlumbergerSema has been awarded a contract to develop and supply Java open platform credit cards to Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company of Japan.

The vendor claims that the order for its Palmera Swift 16K smart cards marks the debut of multi-application Java-based credit cards in Japan.

The Japanese card issuer says it expects to use the cards to deploy new value-added services such as payment, loyalty programmes, PC log-on and network identification to its corporate customers this year. Sumitomo Mitsui has already deployed SchlumbergerSema cards internally and is among the first in Japan to have a fully secure, logical and physical access system.

In the past eighteen months Sumitomo Mitsui has issued over a million Visa chip cards bearing loyalty application under the V-Point brand.
