Behold the contactless jacket

Fintech fashionistas can now make payments off the cuff with a natty new jacket from Scottish knitwear brand Lyle & Scott that comes complete with a buttoned-down pouch for Barclays' BPay contactless wristbands.

At £150, the 'contactless' jacket is cheaper than an Apple Watch, while retaining the 'wow' factor that comes from making a payment by just waving your wrist at a contactless terminal.

The jacket is not Barclays' first foray into the knitted wearables market. The bank has also been trialling 'tap and pay' woollen gloves that allow people to pay contactlessly for their shopping without fishing around in their bags for a card.

Nor is Barclays alone in entering the fashion arena, with wearable payments set to invade the catwalk at London Fashion Week in September thanks to a collaboaration between Visa and hip designer Henry Holland.

But both Barclays and Visa are trailling in the trend-setting fashion stakes to Aussie bank Heritage, which in Apil last year teamed up with local tailor MJ Bale and ad agency Whybin\TBWA to develop a 'payweave' suit made from the finest Australian merino wool.

The suit has a contactless payments chip and antenna embedded into its sleeve, enabling wearers to make low value payments by brushing their wrists against Visa payWave terminals.
