Westpac rolls out PayTag contactless stickers

Westpac NZ is to issue customers with NFC stickers that can be attached to phones for contactless payments of up to $80.

Designed in partnership with Gemalto, the stickers are only available to Westpac customers who currently hold a MasterCard with the bank.

Customers attach the sticker to the back of their mobile handset and can make payments at any contactless Eftpos terminal by tapping their phone.

The first run PayTags are initially being offered free of charge as the bank begins a promotional push on the technology. Thereafter, Westpac plans tol levy a $4.99 charge for each sticker issued.

The bank has been trialling the technology with NZ customers over the past year. Westpac's chief product officer Shane Howell says the feedback  has been 'overwhelmingly positive'.

“We are also trialling Host Card Emulation (HCE) “digital wallet” technology which enables credit and debit card details - and over time things like transport cards, loyalty cards and potentially ID - to be accessible from Android smartphones. This will be available to our customers from early next year," says Howell.
