Bump launches iPhone payment app

After being removed from the PayPal app, Bump Technologies has unveiled its own iPhone payment tool, enabling users to send money to each other by tapping handsets together.

The original Bump, which is used to share contacts and photos, is one of the most popular smartphone apps in history, with over 80 million downloads.

In 2010, PayPal incorporated the technology into its own iPhone app, meaning customers could log in to their account, enter the payment details and then bump their phone against the recipient's handset. An Android version soon followed.

However, last year PayPal signalled a change of direction, unveiling an NFC-based widget for phone-to-phone payments in an approach it argued is simpler to use than Bump, requiring fewer steps. Sure enough, earlier this month Bump was dropped from the latest PayPal iPhone app.

However, now a dedicated Bump Pay app has been launched, the first fruits of its internal incubator, Bump Labs. Once downloaded and linked to a PayPal account, users just type in the amount of money they want to send and then bump phones.
