HSBC ATM and e-banking services fall over

HSBC was hit by a major glitch on Friday afternoon, leaving angry customers unable to access their online accounts or use cash machines as the weekend beckoned.

The problem hit at 14.45 GMT, with customers taking to Twitter to complain. Some people have also reported issues at the point-of-sale, in branches and on the first direct site.

An hour after the glitch hit, HSBC's UK press Twitter account was used to confirm "issues with our systems" which are "being worked on urgently".

By 16.51 GMT, the bank was back on Twitter: "Card terminals and internet banking should now be back on. Sorry and thanks again for bearing with us."

It is good to see some banks are starting to respond to different and more alternative channels for supporting their clients.

This is what being in touch is about.
