NAB glitch hits Aussie wage payments

Yet another technology meltdown at National Australia Bank could leave millions of people without pay this weekend.

The bank - which has been beset by glitches over the last few months - took to Twitter today to warn customers: "Some NAB customers' account balances may not be up-to-date this AM. We are investigating the issue & will update ASAP."

The problems also temporarily knocked out the Web site of NAB's online unit UBank.

According to the Australian newspaper, the problem is affecting workers whose employers use NAB and associated banks for their payroll, meaning it is hitting customers of other banks as well.

CBA's NetBank unit has tweeted: "Due to issues at NAB, their o/night processing has been delayed, these issues will affect payments to you from NAB and other banks accounts".

A statement on the NAB Web site says: "National Australia Bank wishes to advise that it is currently experiencing some delays and as a result some customer accounts may not yet be up to date. We are currently working to rectify this matter and understand and regret any inconvenience this may have caused customers."

The Aussie bank has been beset by technical problems recently. It spent much of December suffering from payment processing problems attributed to a "corrupted file in the processing batch" leading to thousands of complaints and in January its online and telephone banking services collapsed again.
