Data quality manager James Stevenson set up false accounts and credited them with around 14 million Nectar points, which would require spending of £7 million to acquire legitimately.

Stevenson, who worked as a lead analyst programmer for the supermarket in London, pleaded guilty to theft of Nectar points between 17 November 2002 and 24 May 2003. He also admitted redeeming £8,120 worth of points.

At the Old Bailey, Judge Peter Thornton released Stevenson on bail over Christmas but warned that a custodial sentence was likely in the new year.
