Police in Perth are warning consumers to check their financial transactions after uncovering a network of compromised point-of-sale terminals at major retailers in the Western Australian city.
The Major Fraud Squad says it has received "substantial information" regarding alleged credit/debit card skimming and PIN capturing occurring throughout the Perth metropolitan area at retail outlets.
Police say they are unable to disclose technical details of the scam - due to "operational sensitivities" - which is believed to have netted the crooks about A$150,000 from 2500 bank accounts.
The Major Fraud Squad and the Technology Crime Investigation Team have commenced an operation to investigate the offences and are asking retailers to report any suspicious activity and any occurrences where Pos devices have been stolen or tampered with.
The force has also advised members of the public to check their credit and debit card statements and to report any suspicious transactions to their bank.
