HSBC rolls out facial recognition technology at data centres

HSBC is rolling out biometric facial recognition technology from OmniPerception at two UK data centres after a successful trial at its headquarters in Canary Wharf.

The bank will install 10 access control systems based on OmniPerception's CheckPoint technology to verify the identity of employees and contractors and protect sensitive data at the sites.

CheckPoint uses "light immune" cameras - which the vendor says work in gloomy conditions - alongside identity verification software to protect access to restricted areas.

HSBC spokesman Neil Brazil says "the development and implementation of the latest biometric control systems illustrates the importance which HSBC places on good security and staying one step ahead of the fraudsters".

Earlier this year Société Générale implemented biometric access controls for dealing personnel after an internal investigation into its EUR5bn rogue trading scandal found major weaknesses in supervision, security and control procedures.
