GoPago includes free tablet in POS package

In a bid to make headway in a crowded market, mobile-commerce outfit GoPago is making an aggressive pitch to merchants by throwing in all of its point-of-sale software and hardware - including a tablet - for free.

San Francisco-based GoPago launched around three years ago, providing a free smartphone application that allows consumers to browse, order, and pay for local goods and services.

Now, having recently secured financial backing from JPMorgan Chase, the firm is going after the point-of-sale with GoPago Live, taking on the likes of Square and NCR.

With traditional POS systems costing retailers thousands of dollars and even app and tablet options proving prohibitive to some, GoPago is offering everything free.

Merchants who sign up get a free Android tablet with software that automatically syncs and upgrades, provides business analytics, and has the mobile app interface built-in. They also receive free Internet connection, a cash box, receipt printer, and tech support.

The firm makes its money through a fixed 2.85% credit card transaction fee.

Leo Rocco, CEO, GoPago, says: "This is so much more than POS. It's a total solution for brick-and-mortar business owners. We're redefining and resetting the bar for modernising business payments and loyalty programs."

When SQUARE launched, it was easy to believe that there were millions of mobile merchants who couldn't / wouldn't spend the $$$$ on traditional POS, so its market seemed large enough. However, it's difficult to fathom who are the merchants who can't / won't be able to afford tablets starting at a couple of $$$, who form the primary target market for GoPago. Sounds more like the race to the bottom has begun in the mobile POS space.
